Indian film fest in Switzerland

The Swiss Indian Film Bridge - SIFB, a production of Les Films du Lotus (Switzerland) and Curry Western Productions (India) - is organizing an Indian Festival in Geneva during the annual Fetes de Geneve, one of Europe biggest open-air Summer Festival in Europe, where India is this year's guest of honor.

The 3 days festival will take place at the CineLac Open-Air Cinema,by the lakeside, the 10-11-12 August 2011.

Wednesday 10 of August, the opening night will feature a presentation of the BNA GermanyAnnual Central European Bollywood Awards, rewarding the best films of 2010 (a 20 min. presentation from 8.45 pm).

The films screened each night are :

DEV D - 10 August - 9.15 pm

PEEPLI LIVE - 11 August - 9.15 pm

3 IDIOTS - 12 August - 9.15 pm

DEV D by Anurag Kashyap
A modern-day interpretation of the classic novel Devdas by Sarat Chandra. Dev, Paro and Chanda of Dev D reflect the sensibilities, conflicts, exuberance and recklessness of the youth of today. A generation that is jammed between eastern roots and western sensibilities. Dev D is set in the rustic and colorful Punjab and also explores the dingy, morbid, dark underbelly of Delhi. This highly stylized and very original film is a successful mixture of Indian contemporary cinema with Bollywood entertainment.

PEEPLI (LIVE) By Anusha Rizvi
An Indian peasant wants to commit suicide in order to take his family out of debt. But when a journalist prints his decision on the local newspaper, it ignites media frenzy around him and his village. Will he commit suicide? Peepli (live) is a brilliant satire which manages to mine substantial dark humor from a tragic situation while offering pointed and poignant social commentary. It ranks among the best films made in India in the past decade.

3 IDIOTS By Rajkumar Hirani
Two friends embark on a quest for a lost buddy. As they make their way through the perilous landscape, another journey begins: their inner journey through memory lane and the story of their friend - the irrepressible free- thinker Rancho (Aamir Khan), who in his unique way, touches and changes their lives.
3 idiots is this rare film: a perfect blend of entertainment with a socio-political comment, a juxtaposition of heart-rending emotions and humor, scenes that range from extremely hilarious to profoundly saddening and thought provoking ones. 3 idiots still remains a quintessential Bollywood film with songs, dance and slapstick humor. It was a critical success and broke all box office records upon release for any Indian film before it.

These films are to be shown in partnership with CineLac Open-Air Cinema, a unique open-air film facility, in a beautiful site near the shores of Geneva's famous landmark lake. This idyllic spot is the perfect place to chill out, and enjoy happy hours, before indulging in an Indian buffet and an entertaining evening of Indian Cinema at its best.

The Swiss Indian Film Bridge is organized by Curry Western Productions in India and Les Films du Lotus in Switzerland

Naya film festival closes with a brief preview of Aarakshan

Naya Cinema Festival closes with Prakash Jha and Aarakshan!!

Pics: Director Prakash Jha and host Bhawna Somayaa

Taj Enlighten Film Society’s Naya Cinema Festival closed by hosting an exclusive 15 minute preview of Prakash Jha’s upcoming film Aarakshan recently at Cinemax, Versova.

“Future View” was a selection of 20 minute clips from important upcoming releases. Included in the selection also were Anand Gandhi's “Ship of Theseus” and Prashant Bhargava's “Patang”.

Prakash Jha then fielded many questions from the audiences and media present, talking about why he chose this subject and how he had to re-learn mathematics for the film!! He spoke about his admiration for Mr Bachchan and invited any group who had an issue with the film to contact him!

The event was hosted by Bhawnaa Somayaa who also launched her latest book on Amitabh Bachchan.

Aarakshan is an upcoming Hindi film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone. Directed by Prakash Jha, who also directed Raajneeti, it is a high voltage socio-political drama based on one of the most controversial policies of caste based reservations in government jobs and educational institutions.

Other film’s previews included Ship of Theseus, a highly anticipated film by Anand Gandhi, the director of the cult short film “Right Here Right Now” (2003). Patang was presented at the Berlin International Film Festival 2011 and Tribeca Film Festival 2011. It is a co-production between India and USA, a drama set in the backdrop of India’s largest kite festival in Ahmedabad.

The much talked about festival ended with this special screening and aims at a reboot sometime later this year.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes releasing this Friday, August 5th 2011

Fox Star Studios’ Rise of The Planet Of The Apes to open in record number of single screens!

After the superb success of X-Men: First Class, looks like Fox Star Studios is all set to have more box office magic as it releases next week, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, one of the most anticipated Hollywood film of this year!

Come August 5th, the film will open in a record number of 450 single screens, doubly trumping any previous Hollywood films such as Harry Potter and X-Men: First Class, which itself opened in 250 single screens. No other Hollywood film has seen such a massive and aggressive opening, especially in the dubbed languages (Hindi, Tamil and Telegu), as the film makers feel audiences all over India will connect with the film because of its universal appeal. In fact the release of this film is on par with openings received by anticipated Bollywood films, say sources, since it’s the only big release this week.

Starring the dashing Oscar nominated actor of 127 Hours fame James Franco and India’s very own Slumdog Millionaire girl, Freida Pinto; this highly awaited visual effects extravaganza is generating a lot of Oscar buzz already in Hollywood, with initial responses to the film within trade circles being phenomenal.

The highlights of this reboot are the stunning effects rendered, without the usage of any real animals.

Peter Jackson’s Oscar winning New Zealand-based digital effects house Weta Digital, which have created masterpieces such as AVATAR, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, and KING KONG have expanded upon its Academy Award-winning work to render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors. This technology allows audiences to emotionally engage with a lead character, a chimpanzee named Caesar, who does not actually exist.

The film is already in talks amongst trade experts in Hollywood for its stunning CGI effects and performance capture by actor Andy Serkis as Caesar the Ape, which some claim have surpassed Avatar as well.

Well, looks like Audiences are in for a visual delight this August 5th!
