Mumbai Plays ranging from comedy to human folly, from tragedy to edge-of-the-seat thriller, this year's edition of The 'NCPA Pratibimb - Marathi Natya Utsav' has an entertaining and enriching mix of theatre for Marathi theatre aficionados.

The National Centre for the Performing Arts, India's premier arts and culture institution, is proud to present the second edition of NCPA Pratibimb - Marathi Natya Utsav 2011 - a festival of Marathi Theatre from August 5 - 9, 2011 at the Experimental Theatre, NCPA, with a selection of five contemporary Marathi plays. Renowned theatre expert, Amol Palekar is this year's face of the festival. All the performances will be followed by Chauraha discussions with the director and cast of the play. In addition, a photography exhibition spanning the birth of Marathi Theatre in the late 19th century to its progress against the socio-political background of the '60s will be held from August 2-10, 2011 in the Piramal Gallery, NCPA, in collaboration with the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Government ! of Maharashtra.

With very few Marathi theatre festivals in town, NCPA aims to provide Marathi theatre with a new destination, reach, stage and audience. At NCPA Pratibimb this year, the NCPA recognises a trend in Marathi theatre - that of grand revivals of old hits, and includes three popular plays that made dazzling comebacks, without losing any of their relevance or entertainment value. Outstanding plays like Jaswandi, a Maharashtra Rangabhoomi presentation, written and directed by Sai Paranjpye, Moruchi Mavshi, by Kirti and Asmi Productions and Lovebirds, by Amruta and Saisakshi productions will enthrall the audience. The other side of Marathi theatre, that is the Experimental side, can never be ignored, and the two offbeat plays break new ground in expression and stagecraft. Gajab Kahani, by Aasakta Kalamanch and Mister Behram, by Kalakendra.

The performances were preceded by Katta (lively sessions of debate and discussion). Running into near packed houses, the festival was appreciated by the audiences, theatre enthusiasts as well as the media fraternity.

Speaking on the occasion, Khushroo N Suntook, Chairman, NCPA, says, "NCPA has assembled a contemporary array of Marathi theatre today. Old stories have been given a new form by newcomers, and new writers are bringing their fresh vision onstage. It enables the audience to have a glimpse of the best of contemporary Marathi plays and much more, all under one roof. The festival is our humble initiative to encourage Marathi theatre."

Deepa Gahlot, Head - Programming (Theatre & Film), NCPA, says, "It is with great pleasure that we announce the second edition of the NCPA Pratibimb Marathi Natya Utsav. The plays this year represent the best of Marathi theatre over the years as well as the adventurous spirit of today's young groups. We hope that sustained activity on the Marathi theatre front will soon make the NCPA a hub of everything new and exciting that comes up on the Marathi Rangabhoomi."

In the third edition of NCPA Pratibimb, NCPA plans to take it to a next level with NCPA Pratibimb Package, where NCPA will have commissioned plays that will travel across the state under the NCPA Pratibimb banner. Till then, enjoy the 2011 edition of NCPA Pratibimb this monsoon with great Marathi plays, chauraha sessions and an informative photography exhibition only at the NCPA.
