Three cheers to a successful and fruitful MIFF 2012- Johnson Thomas
The hustle and bustle of a film festival is always a welcome change from the routine rigmarole of a hectic, unfullfilling city life. MIFF 2012 , is one such film festival where directors, technicians, actors, cinematographers, international delegates throng together in the hope of catching some invigorating fare. This premier documentary, short and animation festival of India threw up some interesting surprises along the way. Socially illuminating films, Interesting discussions, exhilarating tete-a-tetes, interviews and surprising events. Master classes with International directors, Open Forums to discuss the various trends within documentaries, Press conferences with filmmakers and much sought after parties, MIFF 2012 had them all.
The events were also well attended by both delegates , press as well as celebrities from the world of Documentaries. The films were of course the most important part of MIFF 2012. This year threw up some of the most interesting and varied subjects and the films themselves were of a very high quality. Both the National and the International competition sections were smattered with worthy gems. Kundan Ranjan’s ‘The Man who moved the mountain,’ Navroze Contractor’s ‘Broom Stories/Jharu Katha, ’ ,’ Makarand Brahme’s ‘Indivisible Music/Adwait Sangeet,’ S Someetharan’s ‘Mullaithivu Saga,’ noted film critic and Bolly wood filmmaker Khalid Mohammed’s ‘ the Last Irani Chai’ Dr Gaurav Chhabra’s controversial banned film ‘Inklab,’ Ajitesh bSharma’s much feted ‘ Visible Bra Straps’ were some of the much sought after filmsin the Indian competition section. The International competition had some exciting documentaries, shorts and animation films to it’s credit too. ‘Abel versus Pythagoras’by jesus Neito Esteban and Angel Esteban, ‘Dream of a Painter’ by Sudheer Gupta, The Silent Poet ‘ by Borun Thokchom, ‘dancing with dictators ‘ by Hugh Piper, Anand Patwardhan’s epic length ‘Jai Bhim Comrade’, ‘Pink Saris’ by Kin Longinotto and ‘Trafficked-The reckoning’ by luigi Acquisto and ‘Womb of the world’ by Rajendra Kondapalli were some of the films worth catching from the international section. Even the FTII crop of films from the past decades since inception saw a good turnout. All in all this was a very fruitful MIFF 2012. Hopefully the next one will throw up many more surprises.!
