AFRICAN LEADERS CONCLUDE CONSULTATIONS ON WAYS TO CONNECT RURAL COMMUNITIES IN FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE

Freetown, June 25, 2012 – A broad range of stakeholders concluded their 3-day consultation on effective ways of providing sustainable ICT connectivity for rural communities in Africa at the 7th Annual Connecting Rural Communities (CRC) Africa Forum of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation. Opening CRC Africa Forum 2012, HE the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, said the Government of Sierra Leone “view access to ICTs, telecommunication network services and functional postal services in both urban and rural areas as a sine qua non for effective functioning of governance” which remains an underlying need for almost all governments. The participation at the 2012 Forum reflected how important this need was felt by both the public sector and the private sector, with senior policy makers and regulators from a dozen countries together with private sector entities and social enterprises interacting on key issues impacting on rural connectivity. Hon Dr Samura Kamara, Minister of Finance of Sierra Leone and Hon Gorge Khaniri, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications of Kenya, together with a large number of parliamentarians represented the views and priorities of policy makers, while Dr. Eugene Juwah, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission, Mr Mohamed Bangura, Director General of Sierra Leone’s National Telecommunications Commission, and Mr Isaac Boateng, the Deputy Manager of Ghana’s National Communications Authority, evaluated regulatory interventions required for sustainable rural connectivity such as infrastructure-sharing, effective spectrum-allocation and financial incentives. Subsequent sessions of the opening day examined relevant technologies and business models while the second day focused on bridging the investment gap through universal service funds and multi-stakeholder partnerships, culminating in a special session on ICT finance and investment in Sierra Leone facilitated by PriceWaterhouseCoopers on the last day. Delegates benefitted from the showcasing of a number of successful projects implemented in Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Lesotho and Sierra Leone. Hon Alhaji Ben Kargbo, the Minister of Information and Communications of Sierra Leone said it was opportune that Sierra Leone was able to host the 7th Connecting Rural Communities Africa Forum at a time when the country is embarking on a focused programme to provide ICT connectivity to all its people including its far flung rural communities. “Our latest achievement, the landing of the ACE cable, has opened a new window to the world,” he said, “and I look forward to a commensurate reduction of cost of international connectivity that will support our long term aim of equitable ICT access to all.” Prof Tim Unwin, the CEO of CTO added that “while the world speaks about ‘connectivity for all’, the CTO has graduated to a stage where we speak about ‘appropriate connectivity for all’ which brings into play a raft of policy, regulatory, technical and operational issues requiring an on-going dialogue between stakeholders. CRC Africa Forum is an important strand of that continuous dialogue, enriched by the experiences of our members and the organisation’s internal knowledge”. Prof Unwin added that “it was both a duty and a privilege for the CTO to hold the 7th event of this highly successful series in Sierra Leone, which has been a steadfast member of the CTO. The warm hospitality of Sierra Leone has made our stay a pleasant and a memorable experience for which I thank the Ministry of Information and Communications and the National Telecommunications Commission” The event was supported by Ericsson, Detecon International, Intelsat and 03B Networks together with local sponsors, Sierratel, Afcom, Airtel and Africell. The annual CRC Africa Forum was launched by the CTO in 2006 to assist Commonwealth Africa provide ICT connectivity to its rural communities, which continue to lag behind despite some impressive gains Africa has made in recent times. Since then CRC has become the central event to examine issues, exchange views and build relationships.

Kapil Sibal inaugurates IIT Bombay workshop to train 10 thousand teachers through ICT Engineering college teachers from 168 remote centres interact with IIT staff in Mumbai

In a first of its kind experiment in the world, Union Minister of Human Resource Development Mr. Kapil Sibal today inaugurated the 10,000 teacher training programme conducted by IIT Bombay under the ‘Talk to a Teacher’ project of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Training for 10,000 engineering college teachers from across the country is being conducted leveraging the broadband network and ICT tools. This training programme is conducted through 168 remote centres located all across India. The lectures in this course are delivered from IIT Bombay by Professors of IIT Bombay and IIT Madras. Through the software A-VIEW, audio-video connectivity is provided between all the centres and IIT Bombay. The course consists of lectures, live interactions and lab sessions. This method of synchronous education has been developed at IIT Bombay, under the leadership of Prof. D. B. Phatak. This method of education allows allows participation of a large number of women teachers, who normally are unable to join contact programmes at distant locations, owing to family commitments. The Minister interacted with the remote centres from Kanyakumari, Rajkot, Srinagar and Nagpur. A representative of IIT Bombay symbolically presented an Aakash Tablet to the Minister. The Minister suggested that the IIT Bombay Director Prof. Devang Khakhar present Aakash devices to the Heads of a few institutions which host the remote centres of the 10,000 teacher training programme. The Minister said that he was happy that the Aakash project has picked up speed and is ready for release. Unlike other tablet devices, Aakash can also be used to create computer programs, in Python, C, C++ and Scilab, for example. In addition to being a computer, Aakash will also be an access device, in applications, such as e-governance. The Minister thanked IIT Bombay for doing a wonderful job porting many useful software on to Aakash.

Initially there is difficulty in adjusting with new relations but in the later period it is the new relations which create a problem for the old ones. However, in the end of the movie all the problems built in the relations are dissolved. Thus the film “Second Marriage Dot Com”dissolves the problems faced by this family brought together by fate. She was though not much skilled in Hindi yet she learned the language. “Language was the biggest barrier when I came here,” she says. “In the Big Boss house it was a rule to speak in Hindi and I was often sent to in-house jail for breaking that rule. But when I came out, I hired a professional Hindi tutor and took coaching for a year.” So now does she speak Hindi fluently? Positive! “I talk to my maid in Hindi! Now I can speak in Hindi fluently. I love the language, it’s a sweet one.”
The starlet has been doing couple of others things as well, some social work, some dance, some shows and now that her movie is up for release the excitement doesn’t cease. A Very special dance act was put together by Esha,Ahana, and Karan (Mani Ratnam assistant) for both the families. Spider-man is one such character that brings the old and the young together. With its reboot film in the franchise- The Amazing Spider-man releasing in India on the 29th June; all seem to have bucked up. The weekends are set with families, spouse or friends and it’s going to be a spidey weekend for all! But there are things which not all the spidey fans are aware of. The Classic Marvel Comic Book character, the creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, first appeared in 1962 in the last issue of the comic book Amazing Fantasy. The character made such an impression that the comic was renamed The Amazing Spider-Man, reappearing in March 1963.Well-known to fans of the Spider-Man comic books, Gwen Stacy made her first appearance in December 1965 (The Amazing Spider-Man #31).The Lizard is a classic Marvel villain, having made his first appearance in the 1963 in The Amazing Spider-Man #6. Sony Picture’s The Amazing Spider-man comes to us with the Peter Parker story packaged in a new manner. The unseen truth of the spider-man gets revealed with the movie. After the phenomena of the first 3 movies, Peter Parker starts over in high school in this brand new installment. He also has a new love – Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) which was earlier played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-man 3. The movie comes as a fresh air with all together new cast and new Director. Film (500) days of summer fame director Marc Webb has directed the film which stars Andrew Garfield as the Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr Curt Connors who transforms into The lizard. The film also has India’s very own Irrfan Khan in a pivotal role of Dr Ratha. It is the first film to have non-Americans playing not only the lead roles but also the villains – Andrew Garfield (British), Rhys Ifans (British) and Irrfan (Indian) It seems like it is the perfect timing for a new Spider-Man to greet the audience as 10 years ago the first film in the franchise was released. Also the franchise will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Adding a new dimension to the film is the fact that the franchise fans will swing along with their favourite superhero as the movie will be in 3D!

The Amazing Spider-man of Sony Pictures releases in India a week ahead of USA. Indian star sparkling in this 3D flick, Irrfan Khan, though will be in USA for the premier yet at a Sony Pictures event held today in Mumbai, he spoke to the media. After unveiling the never before seen trailer of The Amazing Spider-man, the Paan Singh Tomar interacted with the media and shared his experience of working in the movie. “I am very glad to have been a part of America’s biggest fantasy film. It was a great experience working with Marc Webb and my other co-stars. To work with such a unit and production team is a dream come true.” The star could not stop his praises for the new Spider-man. Talking about Andrew, Irrfan says, “Andrew is one rare actor, a very promising actor. I don’t think any other spider-man was better than him. He is best suited for this role.” Though Irrfan’s role in the film is very less but he plays a pivotal role and for him it doesn’t matter how long his role will be rather he is keen on how moving those few minutes of his character will be. “I don’t look at how big is my role; I look at the character and what it represents to the world.”The character of Dr Ratha that Irrfan will be playing in the movie is vital as the character plays boss to the main villain in the film - Dr Curt Connors- and is the one who is pushing the transformation of Curt into The Lizard. So is Irrfan a spider-man fan too? “Yes, definitely. I used to read comic books and I had been a fan of spider-man. But it was not just spider-man I was a fan of rather I liked all the characters in it. If given a chance to be a Superhero what change will Irrfan bring about for the betterment of mankind? “If given a chance to be a Superhero I would like to wipe out the ignorance of the human being.” Before he signed off Irrfan spoke about the film. “The film is very well made and will definitely please the audience,” he said.

Naorem Landan Singh from Manipur, India has won the Mr World Open Junior Silver Medal


The public of Kakching felicited Mr World Open Junior 2012 Silver Medalist, Mr Naorem Landan Singh. The competion was held at Moscow from June 1-3, 2012. The feciltation was organised by Thoubal District Body Building Association, Kakching today at Kakching Library Auditorium. Director Vikram Veturi’s Profile

His forte always had been romantic genre movies, is what he says! He had very little knowledge that very soon he might be directing a reboot film in the Spider-man series “THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN”. Marc Webb when was approached by the producers of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN with a proposal to direct it, prompt came his reply, “I don’t make movies like that!” But the producers were super confident about their choice. Marc Webb who entered the Hollywood’s glamour world initially directed the music videos and later made his debut in the film-world with the movie “(500) Days of Summer”. His potentials became pristine as soon as the movie found itself a place in the hearts of the audience. Webb once again weaves a magical web of love with the story of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. Recalling the time when he was first approached to sign as the director for the film, Webb says he was shocked and thought it to be an absurd idea. There was pressure that he felt from the comic book fan community and the wonderful work done by Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire. But how did he overcome it? “I was also inspired by that and wanted to honour that and make something that makes a different interpretation. Whether it is Gwen Stacy, or Peter Parker's parents, or Dr Curt Connors — there's so much stuff that we haven't seen before that's interesting. That inspired me,” says Webb. Considering his surname Webb sure seems like a right guy to direct the movie but over the choice of Andrew Garfield starring as the lead for the movie, Webb says, “He was just the right guy. In his screen-test, he killed it. It was one of those things - we did the screen-test and that night I was cutting it together and I couldn’t stop watching it. He moved like a kid, his elbows were flying all over the place, and even though he’s a little bit older, he had the humour, the awkwardness but also an ability to go deep in a way that very few actors can do. He’s a highly-trained actor, he’s very thoughtful about that and that grabbed me. The editors we’re working with, they didn’t know he was British!” The previous series of the Spider-man showed Mary Jane as the love interest of Peter Parker but Webb’s reboot film will showcase Gwen Stacy instead of Mary Jane. “In the comics, Gwen Stacy is Peter Parker's first love. I thought about bringing Gwen is because the dynamics of the romantic chemistry between a powerful smart girl and a powerful smart guy intrigued me.” The movie has retained the important iconic elements of the comics like the way Peter becomes Spider-Man, the character of Uncle Ben and the webshooters etc. but the addition to the story will be the character of Dr Ratha, played by Irfan. “Irfan plays boss to Dr Curt Connors, the big gun himself. Dr Curt is a smart man, so I needed somebody with a level of intellectual sophistication as Rhys. Irfan has a very strong presence. He is so sophisticated and has such dignity and splendour onscreen. I love his subtlety. He is in the film for only 4-5 scenes, but those have a powerful impact. I just wanted to be able to work with Irfan and the first chance I got I persuaded him to do this role. Thankfully he decided to do the film. I am so inspired by his craft, work ethic and wonderful humanity.” The Sony Pictures movie which releases all over India on 29th June, week ahead of USA will be in 3D. Talking about using 3D technology Marc says, “There is something about the experiential quality of Spider-man that I thought was great to render in 3D.We wanted to put audience in the shoes of Spider-man. I wanted the audience to feel that connection and thats what we tried to do. And at the end of the day it’s just the way of storytelling!”

Emma Stone did not have to do much stunt work for The Amazing Spider-man but it is sure something Andrew Garfield really had to work hard on. The Armstrongs worked closely with Webb on increasing the level of practical stunt work for our new spider-man. Andrew Garfield is heard to have trained himself under the guidance of the Armstrongs for over three months doing trampoline work, power core moves, perfecting basketball skills, as well as martial arts, gymnastic and parkour work, all with instruction from some of the top people in the world in each discipline. Not only did Andrew learn these skills but he turned out to be quiet an observer agrees Marc Webb the director. “I think one of the traits which makes Spider-Man so interesting is how quickly he can moves, how fast he is,” notes Webb. “Spiders are tiny creatures that can move with incredible speed and efficiency, and that was important to reflect in the character. Andrew spent a lot of time studying how spiders moved, and he came up with a body language that felt spider-like. His work ethic and performance is just extraordinary – it was remarkable to watch.” “Andrew gave 200% to everything he tried. He is one of the most dedicated actors I’ve ever seen go through this process,” says Andy Armstrong. “His willingness to try anything really was extraordinary, and he ended up doing some really gnarly action bits on the film.” How very impressive these stunts will be will be revealed when the Sony Pictures film releases on 29th June, a week ahead of USA.

Spurred by the success and acceptance, if not red-carpet welcome accorded to Indo-Canadian porn and adult entertainment star Sunny Leone in India, several European and American porn stars are considering a career in India, says celebrity publicist and freelance journalist Flynn Remedios who recently conducted an online internet poll on a Twitter.
According to Flynn Remedios, “We contacted about 100 porn stars in Europe and America and asked them if they would like to come to India to shoot either for a film or some print photo shoots. About two years ago, a majority of them would have answered a straightforward “NO” knowing the legal situation and other socio-political ground realities in a conservative country like India. Now the situation has completely changed. With Sunny Leone endorsing a mobile phone brand in India and her 3-film contract with Mahesh and Pooja Bhatt, besides her stint in Bigg Boss last season, several porn stars are busy contacting production houses, artiste management firms and casting agencies in India for work. I have been approached by at least three porn actors for Bigg Boss 6 and other Reality Show participation through my news blog futuristicmedianetwork.wordpress.com,” explained Flynn Remedios, adding that another 7-10 international celebrities in the same league as Pamela Anderson are eyeing the top shows in India.
“The porn actors we contacted said they were willing to do “all kinds of work” for anywhere between 300 USD to a 1000 USD per day (Rs 20,000 to Rs 55,000 per day) depending on the kind of work involved. If it’s a big banner film production, some of them were even willing to work for around 100 USD per day. This is much less than what the average Indian model would charge per day. Another Indian Casting Agency Crimson Gems Productions has signed on 5 international adult artistes for prints and brand endorsement work in India.”
“Foreign models and actors are treated like Kings and Queens in India and are paid much more than what they would get in their own countries. Porn artistes get anywhere from Rs 20,000 to Rs 40,000 per shift in the US. Here they are paid Rs 50 to 70k per shift day, plus 5 star stay and travel. That is the reason why many of them are packing their bags and getting on the first flight to India,” opines Remedios.

All roads led to the Shanmukhananda Hall on Saturday where the dance extravaganza, "Summer Funk 2012" presented by Shiamak Davar International (SDI). The most prominent attractions of the evening were Shah Rukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Mahima Chaudhary and Shekhar Ravjiani who attended the event to cheer on their family members participating in the show. Also gracing the event was Smita Thackeray who was seen clapping along and enjoying the performing arts experience.
“The best training school in the world to foray into the performing arts, this is the perfect place where I wanted my daughter to learn to dance and perform like a super star. There is no better teacher than Shiamak and our association goes back a long way” praised Shah Rukh. “I am here today only because Shah Rukh trusted me and made me do 'Dil Toh Pagal Hai'. Gauri who has danced with me and done shows with me is such a talent. Shah Rukh’s humility makes him a true star”, said Shiamak. Dancing to a Bollywood number, Suhana has got her right foot forward and Shiamak will make sure she gets her dancing shoes on! Shahid who felt at home, said that this is where he started from, and the 5 years spent teaching and dancing with Shiamak are probably the most positive years in his life. ‘Shahid truly understood the spirituality behind the way I work and has imbibed that in himself as well. I feel like so proud of him now that he is such a big star’ commented Shiamak. Shahid’s brother Ishaan looks like he is walking in his brother’s footsteps with an equivalent talent for dance and chocolate boy charm.
The night was filled with surprises when Shiamak presented the stars with a special piece choreographed by him, in his trademark, Shiamak Style. First Peoples Worldwide (FPW) and the Social Change Film Festival and Institute (SCFFI) are seeking films by Indigenous filmmakers for the second annual Social Change Film Festival & Institute, November 28 – December 2, 2012 in New Orleans, LA USA. Films must be created by an Indigenous filmmaker(s) and have a strong social message. We celebrate the independent spirit of excellent film making and creative storytelling. We are looking for films that generate dialogue, spark policy change, and/or activate communities around key social issues of our times. Selected films will represent a diversity of perspectives from all over the world. SCFFI seeks to promote the ability of film to inspire action. On a beautiful evening in a small remote village in Gujarat, a farmer who owns some buffaloes goes to a dairy cooperative society (known as Sahakari Mandali) in his village to sell milk. He collects his passbook that records the milk poured, fat percentage and money he would earn. He happily goes back home satisfied with the income his buffalo is generating. After some time, a growing child in Kolkata licks the last drop of milk; a family in USA eats a delicious slice of cheese, while a girl in Australia is delighted to have an ice-cream, all made from the same milk the farmer gave to the Sahakari Mandali! If the farmer had lived in a bygone era more than half a century back, his buffalo would generate lesser milk, most of which would be spoiled due to lack of proper chilled containers. He would have to travel long distances to deliver the milk to the only dairy in vicinity, Polson dairy in Anand and face the unfair and exploitive practices to get meager amounts. India then was not even capable of fulfilling its own milk needs. About 60 years later, India today is the world’s largest producer of milk and milk products. How this turnaround happened is now a legendary story with Dr. Verghese Kurien as its hero and millions of farmers supporting him to launch a white revolution.

The origins Inspired by India’s freedom struggle, it all began when farmers in a small town near Anand city in Gujarat made milk as a symbol of protest. They approached Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for a solution to combat monopolistic practices of the Polson Dairy. He inspired them to be united and fight by removing the middle men and supply milk directly to Bombay. In 1946, under the guidance of Morarji Desai (Ex-prime minister of India) and Tribhuvandas Patel (local farmer leader and also the first Chairman of Amul Dairy), this group of farmers from two villages formed their own cooperative now known as Anand Milk Union Limited – AMUL. They were then joined by Dr. Verghese Kurien in 1949. They designed a 3 tier model with milk collection at village level Dairy Cooperative Society, milk processing in plant at district level milk union such as Amul and milk distribution plus marketing done at state level milk federation. The then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri studied the Amul Model during his visit to Anand and impressed by the whole setup and asked Dr. Kurien to replicate this Amul model in entire country. In 1965, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) was formed and Operation Flood program was launched to make similar cooperative dairies across the nation and fulfill India’s growing milk needs. Dr. Kurien and his team deliberately lobbied to keep the headquarters of NDDB in Anand, away from the power hungry and bureaucratic Delhi, and also aimed to draw the already accumulated expertise at AMUL. It was observed that while the milk collection is undertaken through various village level dairy cooperatives, milk products and milk distribution plus marketing must be through a single entity. Thus Gujarat cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) was setup in 1973 in which all co-operative dairies of Gujarat state became members and it has been marketing and managing Amul brand since then. GCMMF is today, India’s largest food product marketing organisation with a turnover of US$ 2.2 billion in 2010-2011. A host of other organisations have sprouted due to the white revolution spearheaded by Amul. Indian Dairy Machinery Limited (IDMC), Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), National Cooperative Dairy Federation of India (NCDFI), Dhara Vegetable Oil and Foods Company Limited (DOFCO), Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Private Limited (MDFVPL), Animal Breeding Centre (ABC), Tribhuvandas Foundation etc. all have their roots in the operation flood and have provided job opportunities to thousands.

Amul in popular culture Amul is also credited with a Guiness world record for longest running ad campaign of the world for its Utterly Butterly girl portraying day-to-day issues since 1967. In 1977, the Amul story was showcased through a Hindi movie titledManthan directed by Shyam Benegal starring Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri which also won National award for best film. The movie again demonstrated the power of collective might as the movie was financed by a contribution of Rs. 2 by 5 lakh farmers. The contribution of Amul in development of rural India as well as economic growth of nation is unquestionable. But despite having such a successful business model with powerful social benefits, this model has not been successful in any other sector. Why hasn’t India witnessed an Amul in agricultural products, packaged food items, consumer goods or any other sector?. The co-operative model has been tried but failed number of times throughout the world in numerous fields. Then what made Amul so successful which is so difficult to replicate? What did other equally dedicated efforts lack which Amul didn’t? The answer probably lies with the people behind the efforts.
The people behind Amul’s inception While there are innumerable heroic deeds and stories surrounding Amul, the two main individuals behind Amul were Dr. Verghese Kurien and Mr. Tribhuvandas Patel. In 1949, Dr. Kurien, was a 28 year Old Mechanical Engineer from Kerala posted in Anand as a dairy engineer in government research creamery. While Mr. Tribhuvandas Patel was a local leader who had been imprisoned number of times during India’s struggle for freedom. With the help of his supporters, he found a dairy co-operative in 1946 in Anand. Fed up with his monotonous and unchallenging job, Dr. Kurien was to leave Anand when Mr. Tribhuvandas Patel expressed his desire that Dr. Kurien stay back for few months as they needed an engineer who could oversee installation of the newly ordered machineries. No one then knew that Dr. Kurien would never leave Anand and make it the milk capital of India. The strength of Amul has been this strong bond of friendship between 2 very different individuals – One in his 40’s, born and brought up in a village as farmer inspired by Gandhi and Sardar while another an engineer in late 20’s having done masters in Michigan University, USA, believer of democracy, already sick of dull government job and looking for a challenge in life. One united more and more villages to set-up co-operative societies, while other brought technology and professionalism to the table. One brought people, other brought processes. One brought grassroots penetration in supplying milk while other brought knowledge and expertise in processing and delivering milk, both keeping bureaucracy and politics at an arm’s length. Together they led a revolution where true power lied in the hands of people who followed them, a revolution that envisioned national growth by giving justice and opportunity to the poorest farmer in the remotest village. Both Mr. Patel and Dr. Kurien have been widely praised for their efforts. Mr. Patel was awarded Ramon Magsaysay award (1963) and Padma Bhushan (1964). He has also been member of Rajya Sabha twice. Dr. Kurien is already a world famous personality and has received number of national and international awards. The most notable ones being Padmashri (1965), Padmabhushan (1966), Padmavibhushan (1999), World Food Prize award (1989), International person of the year award (1993) etc.

The future Today, GCMMF collects approximately 12 million litres of milk from 15,712 village cooperatives with 3 million milk producers daily. It has 47 sales offices and 10 lakh retailers in India. Its product range has expanded from milk and ghee, butter to cheese, health drinks, ice-cream, paneer, chocolates, curd, butter milk, and sweets to now yoghurt and pizza. NDDB now integrates 96,000 dairy co-operatives across India. Amul is one of the most well-known and trusted brand names in India. It has already entered various overseas markets such as USA, Australia, China, Hongkong, Singapore, UAE, Bangladesh, South Africa etc. Having already achieved all this, what’s next for Amul? Where does GCMMF go from here? While GCMMF plans to enter newer global markets and launch more products such as Juices and Jams to leverage the brand name of Amul, there are number of ignored avenues which Amul can enter. Most of the focus in the past decade has been in diversification in terms of products and geographical reach. In short, the focus is in increasing the number of customers and the number of products used by existing customers. GCMMF has a huge network of suppliers at grassroot level. While Amul has done tremendous work for their economic upliftment, there is a need now to alleviate their educational and healthcare needs. Certain work along these lines is already done by the Tribhuvandas Foundation, a NGO that primarily focuses on healthcare of women and infants in few districts. This NGO is funded by village level dairy cooperative societies and Amul. This could be the perfect platform to expand into various other districts on a larger scale and broadening their horizon to provide complete healthcare services to poor farmers. Amul has come a long way since its inception. And we hope there are many more such success stories in India that can then become fables for future generations to read and get inspired. When asked to direct the movie, prompt came Marc’s reply, “I don’t make movies like that!”But according to the producers of the film Marc Webb was a perfect fit to spin the web for this Spider-man. The movie is ready and about to be released. The movie of Sony Pictures releases in India, a week ahead of USA, on 29th June in 3D. When asked about the movie Marc says “When they brought it to me, the 17-year-old kid in myself was excited. I was hesitant at first, but I thought there was so much stuff from the Spider-Man canon that hadn’t been explored yet.” Will Webb be able to recreate the magic of love seen between Peter Parker and Mary Jane in Spider-man? Festival to focus on Indian Arab and Asian movies
Osian's 12th Cinefan Film Festival is all set to expand its wing with the inclusion of acclaimed Bengali Filmmaker - Rituparno Ghosh, whose much awaited contentious film 'Chitrangada' will have its first India premier under the 'Freedom of expression' section of the festival. The film is one of the most radical explorations in Indian film, about the freedom to choose one’s gender and sexual orientation. The sharpness of Ghosh’s portrayal of the Third Sex cultural position comes from his own path-breaking insistence over the past decade in exerting his right to make choices when it comes to sex and gender.
'Chitrangada' is a contemporary reworking of Tagore’s famous dance drama of the same name which depicts the love story of Arjuna and the warrior-princess of Manipur, Chitrangada. Ghosh plays ‘Chitrangada’ to Jisshu Sengupta’s ‘Arjuna in this modern allegorical tale about the fuzzy nature of gender and sexuality. Freedom of expression has always been Osian’s - Cinefan’s core concern since its inception; and naturally the overwhelming principle in all activities for Osian’s. In this context, much of the film programming will reflect the values of a new youth culture both in terms of the cinema shown and the new related musical programs which provide another exciting dimension and energy to Osian’s - Cinefan. The focus will be on the spirit of the youth to rebel so as to define a different future from the past.
