Global Smurfs Day was held on 22nd June 2013 to mark Smurfs creator Peyo’s birthday. The day was highlighted by a worldwide Smurf Ambassadors initiative, which began in Brussels as Veronique Culliford, Peyo’s daughter, appointed Smurf Ambassadors from 28 different countries – including India - and dispatched them to Paris, where much of The Smurfs 2 takes place.  The ambassadors dressed as Smurfs and then boGSD2013_INDIA_23.JPGarded their Smurfs-themed Thalys train for Paris.

In Paris, a huge flash mob greeted them by dancing to Britney Spears’ song “Ooh La La” from the film’s soundtrack – with a little help from Silvia Notargiacomo, choreographer of the French version of “Dancing with the Stars.”  The ambassadors also got to take a goodwill tour of Paris.
Ambassadors who travelled to Brussels and Paris included a wide range of Smurf fans, including television personalities, voice talent, choreographers, contest winners, and journalists -- and not least, characters Tapu and Champak Lal (Dadaji) from the top rated show on India’s SAB TV - “Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah”. The show will be integrating the Global Smurfs Day celebration in Brussels and Paris into its storyline in July, ensuring that even their fictional characters Tapu and Champak Lal pay homage to the Smurfs. Popular kids channel Chutti TV celebrated Global Smurfs Day with an on air contest and a screening of the first Smurfs film. But the Ambassadors’ tour was just the beginning, as people in countries around the world celebrated this special day.  Iconic locations visited by the Smurfs include the beaches of Athens; Dublin’s Ha’Penny Bridge and Moscow’s Gorky Park, which were covered in Smurf-blue flowers to celebrate; Australia’s Surfers Paradise, where city signage was actually changed to Smurfers Paradise for the day; the busy tramways of Hong Kong; Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome; and the Leaning Tower of Pisa; in China, Smurf figurines took over the world-famous Great Wall and other iconic locations around the country.

Elsewhere, Smurfs signed a giant birthday card for Peyo in Mexico City; visited children’s hospitals in Finland; painted Portuguese neighborhoods and South African orphanages blue; and joined the group Right Said Fred in a sing-along in London.

The 15th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival to sport a New Look;- Johnson Thomas

The 15th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival; the premier film festival of the country organized by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), will sport a new look. Just as the ever evolving art and industry of cinema, Mumbai’s most eagerly awaited cultural event has grown in both size and power over the years. To represent this fact and the strong association with the most important centre of the Indian film industry, the festival has created a new visual identity.

The icon is a contemporary and edgy interpretation of the city’s iconic monument, the Gateway of India and is a carefully crafted homage to Mumbai’s art deco era of talkies. The new identity is fluid with a dazzling array of colours, each one representing a particular category at the festival while at the same time reflecting the diverse cultural mosaic of the financial capital of India. The logo by which the festival will be known is a rendition of the coveted Golden Gateway Award, the premier award recognizing the best film at the festival, to give it a familiar albeit modern feel.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shyam Benegal, Filmmaker and Chairman of MAMI, said, “This year we have an exciting new logo that incorporates both the city of Mumbai and the iconic gateway of India."
Commenting on the new logo, Festival Director Mr. Srinivasan Narayanan said, “The festival has evolved into one of the most important film festivals in this part of the world, showcasing the best cinema from all over the globe. The new logo stands for the dynamic and fluid integration of the iconic with progress and evolution which I cannot wait to share with the world.”

The 15th Mumbai Film Festival, a Reliance Entertainment initiative is organized by Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) - a body comprised of Indian film industry stalwarts, which was founded in 1997 by late filmmaker Shri Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Noted filmmaker Shri Shyam Benegal heads the body that consists of film directors including: Sudhir Mishra, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, renowned actresses Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan, actor-director Amol Palekar and Farhan Akhtar and Lyricist, writer, lyricist, writer and director Amit Khanna.

i-sure from Piramal Enterprises’ receiving an extremely positive acceptance-Johnson Thomas

i-sure from Piramal Enterprises’  receiving an extremely positive acceptance
I sure_Pack.jpg
Mumbai, June 2013: Indian lifestyle in the urban areas and to some extent in some rural areas has changed dramatically. Today an Indian woman enjoys all the rights, privileges and facilities that were privy only to men. But with increasing responsibilities, comes rising stress and various unavoidable health issues, like infertility. As per the Census results of India, childlessness in India has risen by 50% since 1981. Even some published research states that, in India, educated women have marked higher infertility rates than the uneducated.

Voicing this concern and addressing it with full priority, Piramal Healthcare introduced i-sure, India’s first ovulation detection kit which claims to maximize the chances of pregnancy. Most infertility cases reported by doctors are due to the wrong timing in intercourse and less because of any medical conditions, i-sure seems to be that one product which addresses this issue effectively.

Ovulation normally occurs somewhere in the middle of the menstrual cycle (14 days before period commencement). However this day keeps varying each month and is difficult to ascertain the exact date. i-sure helps confirm those 2 most fertile days of the woman enabling her to plan her intercourse accordingly  and thus increasing the chances of getting pregnant.

According to a recent survey done by Piramal Healthcare, i-sure has received extremely positive acceptance from women. Majority of users conceived after planning their intercourse, after getting a positive sign from i-sure. Overall, the satisfaction level with these women for i-sure was quite high as it is easy to use, 99% accurate and easily available across India.

A working woman from Delhi opines, “This is an excellent product especially for people who don’t have time to plan for a baby.”  While another non working female from Ahmedabad confesses, “It is convenient to use, plus I had a discussion with them on the live chat they provide on their website. The instructions are easy to read and understand. Interpretation of the result is also easy. In my opinion, it is a good product.”

As we are currently living in a techno-ruled world, it is good to see that there are scientific solutions available addressing health issues of women. With i-sure, the power will be passed into the hands of the woman to control her life and plan her pregnancy effectively.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests has granted in-principal approval for the construction of Chatrapati Shivaji statue  in the Arabian Sea near Marine Drive. The Government of Maharashtra has proposed to build a 309 feet statue four kms from Marine Drive on a 18 acre islet in the Arabian Sea. The site proposed by the state government falls under Coastal Regulation Zone-IV, where any of kind of construction activity is prohibited.
Briefing media persons, Ms. Natarajan said the in-principal  approval was considered as a special case, keeping in mind the aspirations and emotions of people of Maharashtra. She said the Government of Maharashtra put forward convincing arguments and the statue would be built on a solid rock bed, which is well above the high tide line. She however, asserted that no commercial activity can be undertaken at the site.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Prithviraj Chavan further informed that a total of 40 different approvals will have to be obtained before beginning the construction of the memorial.
Environment Ministry is not an obstacle for development”
Ms. Natarajan also emphasized that her Ministry was not an obstacle in the path of development.  She said it was a wrong perception that the Ministry of Environment & Forests puts obstacles in granting green clearances. The Minister said, only 12 per cent of the projects come for approval to the Centre, while remaining 88 per cent projects are cleared by respective state governments.  She said the pendency ratio in her Ministry was very low and there were no proposals pending before the Forest Advisory Committee as on date.
Maharashtra CM agreed with the views expressed by Ms. Natarajan and informed that the Government of Maharashtra was putting in place systems to fast track procedures for clearing projects.
Other important issues
Earlier, the Environment Minister Ms. Natarajan held two separate meetings with senior officials of Environment and Forest Departments of Government of Maharashtra.  Implementation of Kasturi Rangan Report to Western Ghats,  lifting of mining moratorium in Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, clearance for Coastal highways around Mumbai,  environmental clearance for widening of Mumbai – Goa Highway at the Karnala Bird Sanctuary were among important issues discussed during the meeting.
In the forenoon, Ms. Natarajan reviewed the present status of safety measures to deal with protection of environment along the coast. That meeting was attended by senior officers of Ministry of Environment & Forest, Department of Environment, Government of Maharashtra, DG Shipping, Mumbai Port Trust and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Indian Coast Guards, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and ONGC etc.

Environment Minister Jayanti Natarajan favours setting up of a Corpus Fund to fight oil spills
Mumbai / June 20, 2013

Union Minister for Environment & Forests, Ms. Jayanti Natarajan has favoured setting up of a Corpus Fund to aid quick response to fight oil spills off the Indian coast. In recent past there have been frequent incidences of crude oil leakages from breakdown of ships, leakage from pipelines operated by oil companies in west coast.  The Minister held wide ranging consultations with all stakeholders in Mumbai and reviewed the status of present safety systems adopted by concerned agencies.

Addressing a press conference after the two hour long meeting, Ms Natarajan said that the cleaning operation after the oil spills, often got delayed due to lack of clarity about who would fund it. She said, a corpus fund would come in handy under such circumstances and the cleaning up operation could begin immediately, thereby limiting damage to  the environment.  The outgo from the fund would be reimbursed once the compensation liability is established and claims settled.

The Minister said “this is a good proposal, the corpus size and the pattern of funding will be finalized after holding consultations with stakeholders and discussing the matter with the Prime Minister”. Ms. Natarajan said the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board had some experience  in this regard, acquired while dealing with multiple oil slicks during 2010. She said the Maharashtra model will be studied further.

Ms. Natarajan informed that as many as 40 ships were stranded at different places off the Indian coast, but assured that there is no immediate danger from these ships. She said the Shipping Authorities have been monitoring the entry and exit of ships in Indian waters by following well laid out guidelines. The Minister however insisted for strong environmental laws to deal with shipping vessels that damage India’s fragile coastal eco-system, including provisions for establishing criminal liability.

Ms Natarajan also asked the Central Pollution Control Board and the State Pollution Control Boards to review the status of existing pipeline networks at major ports to identify vulnerable areas that would need replacement or upgradation. She also asked the oil companies to upgrade their existing pipelines with monitoring systems like SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) to regularly monitor the health of pipelines. She stressed that environmental measures for control of pollution in handling materials in ports should be strictly followed.

Senior officers of Ministry of Environment & Forest, Department of Environment, Government of Maharashtra, DG Shipping, Mumbai Port Trust and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Indian Coast Guards, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and ONGC etc participated in the meeting.
