English Film review
Johnson Thomas
A soul-stirring darkness of being

Film: Inside Llewyn Davis
Cast: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman
Director: Ethan & Joel Coen

Rating: *  *  * ½

Loosely based on the nearly forgotten folk-singer Dave Van Ronk (and inspired by his posthumous memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street), this Coen Brothers effort is brilliantly shot and enacted. It’s a soulful, unabashedly lyrical take on a talent that never could make it big! Definitely worthy of your patronage!

The film follows Davis for a week as he couch-surfs around Greenwich Village in 1961, just before Bob Dylan arrives to change the folk game.Davis(Oscar Isaac) is an idealistic young folk-singer struggling to make a name for himself in the Greenwich village folk scene. A lot happens within the mind and soul of the main character here. He is a defeatist whi stays true to type. No audience friendly happily ever after is on the horizon for him. The Coen Brothers’ do not tamper with the true grit of his story, layering on darkness after darkness while the lead player is struggling towards redemption. Does he get it?

A terrific line-up of performances by Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garret hedlund and John Goodman makes the journey into personal hell all the more absorbing and immersive. "Inside Llewyn Davis" is the most satisfying and  their best movie yet!
