Film: Mr Peabody and Sherman

Director: Rob Minkoff

Rating: *  *  *

Runtime: 92 minutes.

Synopsis:

Rocky and Bullwinkle show time travelers, Mr Peabody and his adopted human side-kick  Sherman( voiced by Ty Burell and Max Charles respectively), strike out on their own in this big- screen 3D, animated CGI adventure feature directed by Rob Minkoff. It’s a reboot of characters first introduced 60 years ago.

Featuring a hyperintelligent, talking, time-traveling dog and his boy, this 3D toon Mr. Peabody & Sherman represents a pleasant, polished and entertaining effort-one that will go down well with the under 10 audience it’s targeted at.
Minkoff( who helmed Stuart little, The Lion king, The Haunted Mansion) and team make it a pun-raising adventure with historical trysts as a nod to making it a learning experience too. The film has a pro-adoption slant, even though the one who adopts here is a mere dog. They have been largely faithful to the origin story while fleshing out the literally sketchy characters created by Ted Key.  The first 15 minutes of the feature takes the yard trying to establish how after polymath pooch Mr. Peabody (Ty Burrell ) becomes a father to orphan Sherman (Max Charles). But once it gets on it’s way, time travel et al, it’s a fetching joy ride all the way.

Written by playwright and TV stalwart Craig Wright “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” , it’s a slicker, sweeter take on the idea, Peabody (Burrell), a beagle-like pooch finds the infant Sherman (Max Charles) abandoned in an alleyway, takes him in and raises him as his own.
This is director Rob Minkoff’s first fully animated feature since “The Lion King” and with Oscar-winning cinematographer Guillermo Navarro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) on board as a visual consultant, the animation retains the look of the original cartoons, colored by a lush palette. The 3D effects are smartly rendered and Danny Elfman’s score, adds more zip to the entertainment!
