Fading Gigolo(English)

Synopsis: Writer/Director/Actor John Turturro’s ‘Fading
Gigolo’ centers on an elderly new York bookstore owner(Woody Allen) who starts pimping
by turning his middle aged friend(Turturro) into a gigolo hoping to offset the
potential losses from the sinking store.
Review:
In this film Turturro plays Fioravante who hires
himself out to frustrated middle aged women seeking pleasure. It’s a lark at
first. Then he finds himself falling in
love and then kaput he has to make do.
Turturro’s Fiorovante, with his big soulful eyes and
sensitive lovemaking technique, quiet multi-lingual erudition and his
flower-arrangement skills is a hit with the ladies(Sharon Stone, Sofia Vergara).
Once he gets set up with Avigal(Vanessa Paradis), a relatively young, repressed
, lonely widoe of a Rabbi, Fioravante finds himself on a different wicket. A
hint of a romance is in the offing but it doesn’t last long because there is
another suitor(Live Shreiber) vying for the widow’s attention. Murray and
Fioravante are making a lot of dough in the side business so they won’t have to
worry much about the store. What they worry about , if at all, is how to keep
it long-running. Murray has his ideas but Fioravante may not be all that
obliging anymore…
Of course the premise is pretty much outlandish and
there’s not much development happening other than those of the sexual kind. The
romance track is severely understated. What keeps you interested the most is the
quirky conversations, the understated background score and the restrained tongue-in-cheek
performances. The ensemble cast do a fine nuanced job allowing for a tone that
is at once quirky, mildly humorous and remarkably tangible. Allen, Turturro, Paradis,
Stone, Vergara give off their best and make this a movie worth engaging with!
