Picks&Piques/Snippet Film reviews/6thJune2014/Johnson Thomas
Filmistaan(Hindi) Rating: * *  * ½You will laugh, cry and be amazed at the lucidity with which the universal theme of brotherhood between warring nations is put forth here. And you don’t even feel it’s preachy! Thought-provoking, mind churning, beautifully fluid, the story is told with grace and economy that will put even the experienced directors to shame. An amazing feat coming from a first time director, Nitin Kakkar and cast (brilliantly irreverent Sharib Hashmi) and crew filled with newcomers! It’s also highly entertaining! Run to the theatres…
Holiday: A soldier is never off-duty(Hindi) Rating: *  *  ½  A.R. Murugadoss dons the mantle of Director for his second hindi film (after Ghajini) and his treatment retains the action hefts of his first mainstream work. Puerile sentiment focusing on the Indian army notwithstanding, this action romance is quite agile and racks up some stylized blows as a genre flick. Game show tricks, assured helming and Akshay’s fluidly executed maneuvers provide the requisite thrills. The romance is way off-key though and the constant bouts of illogic might get you down. Don’t expect any logic here and you wont be disappointed. This is the kind of film carefully designed to fit in as a popular entertainer. And it shows!
Tum Ho Yaara( Hindi/Tamil) Rating: *  * A south side romance, this film made in Tamil and Hindi takes imagination to new heights without establishing any logic or conviction. Quite entertaining in bits and parts.
The World Before Her(Hindi/English/Documentary) Rating: *  *  * ½ India is a contradiction, where ideas and thoughts both ancient and modern proliferate side-by-side. The representatives though are also emblematic of the inherent duality between conditioning and beliefs. This duality is best represented by the women of this country. Juxtaposing the Durga Vahini against the Miss India brigade, two strident ideologies belonging to opposing streams of thought. This illuminating documentary brings out the contradictions and bigotry inherent in both ideologies.

Edge of Tomorrow(3D/Imax/English) Rating: *  *  * Doug Liman’s propulsive action packed Groundhog Day rewind offers cheap loopy thrills, but the edge of the seat tension and hyperkinetic bursts of action can get you on edge!
