            Ali Yavar Jung National institute for the Hearing Handicapped, Bandra (W) Mumbai is an autonomous institute working under Department of Disability Affairs, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi. It is the premier institute in the field of rehabilitation of hearing impaired people in the country. Manpower development, Research, Clinical Services, Socio – Economical rehabilitation, Outreach & Extension Services, Information & Documentation, Material Development for training and awareness are the major activities of the Institute. The Institute has regional Centers at Kolkata, New Delhi, Secundarabad and Janla at Bhubaneswar. It has also two Composite regional centers at Bhopal & Ahmadabad under the administrative control.  These are centers aimed at meeting the local and regional needs in terms of manpower development and services. The institute established in 1983, is celebrating its 31st Annual Day on 9th August 2014.

Manpower Development: To deal with the various aspects of rehabilitation of the Hearing Handicapped, various undergraduate, graduate, post graduate courses & Doctoral Programmes are being offered. The Institute is rated excellent by the RCI. More than 15 types of courses are conducted by the Institute. During the Academic year of 2013-14 the Institute has enrolled 664 students for different courses and training programs at Mumbai, its regional centers &CRCs. 

   

Research: Research in the areas of identification, intervention, educational approaches, remedial teaching methods, jobs for the hearing handicapped and technology development have been carried out. To gear up the research activities more than 54 seminars and short term training programs were organized.

Clinical Services:  Comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic, educational services are provided to the hearing & speech impaired. An inter–disciplinary team of audiologists, speech language pathologists, special educators, psychologists, social workers, ENT specialist, pediatrician and neurologist maintain high standard of rehabilitation services. During the year of 2013-14 the Institute has provided clinical services to more than 34,007 (New cases) and 64,668 follow up cases. Along with the clinical services 13085 PWDs were benefitted under ADIP scheme of government of India at Mumbai, regional centers, CRC's and through the Outreach and Extension Services. Also under composite camps, 17145 PWDs were benefitted with different aids and appliances.  

Outreach & Extension services: With the aim of making available the services – diagnosis, fitment, counseling and creating awareness, in the rural and remote area of the county, the institute has an Outreach and Extension Service Department. It has a team of multi–professionals armed with diagnostic equipment and fitment aids, provide services by camping in rural and far flung areas of the country. In addition, they also provide guidance to the interested local NGO's of the rural areas, in setting up service centers, pre–schools, vocational training centers, etc. During the current year the Institute conducted 20 diagnostic camps & 73 fitment camps to provide the services to needy people.

Material Development: Material of various kinds is developed at the Institute to enhance and supplement research, training, educational and clinical programmes of the Institute and for public awareness and parent guidance. These materials are made available to the target group through the Institute's distribution channels.. During the current year the more than 16413 copies of material were distributed among different target groups. For the awareness and training purpose, print, audio and electronic media were effectively utilized by the institute. Along with public information campaign, six live programs were organized on Mumbai Doordarshan during the year.

Information and Documentation:  Information and Documentation Services link effectively AYJNIHH and its beneficiaries directly and indirectly. Its objectives are acquisition, assimilation and dissemination of information to individuals and organizations working in the area of the hearing impairment.

The institute is maintaining a website – ayjnihh.nic.in. It provides a world of exhaustive information on speech and hearing impairment and rehabilitation. Having links with other unique websites, it has general and particular information about various aspects of early identification, prevention, diagnosis, intervention and assistance to persons with hearing impairment and their families in terms of rehabilitation. News and event details are frequently being updated in the website.

To provide the benefit of services offered by Government and Non–Government organizations towards the rehabilitation of persons, the institute has started “Disability Line” an IVRS based telephonic information service system in English, Hindi & regional language of respective state is accessible by a local call has been set up in states of the country. This enables public to have easy access to information regarding disabilities and to avail the benefits/services offered which would facilitate meaningful rehabilitation.

Achievements; In a short span of three decades of service to nation, many millstones set up by the Institute are in excellence in manpower development, research, providing rehabilitation services, vocational training and placement, sign language cell, training and awareness on prevention and many more. It begged several National awards for its valuable contribution in the field of rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.

During the year of 2013-14 the institute has given a target to trained 1500 persons with disability under the skill development program of Prime Minister Council of Skill Development. The aim of the program is provide employment and self employment for PWDs. Challenging the task the institute has provided training to 1678 PWDs in different skills.

The institute continues its pursuit of excellence in the field of rehabilitation of hearing impairment. It strives to improve the quality of life of persons with hearing impairment and nurture them to draw pride and prestige in being differently abled persons.
