#TheTheoryOfEverything(English) Rating: * * * *  As biopic’s this one is based on the Stephen Hawking’s initial breakthrough years of discovery while battling illness and trying to keep his love and family afloat. The point of view is that of his first wife whose memoirs are the basis for the script. The astonishing part is #EddieRedmayne’s stunning performance that gets the details of the horrible progress of illness astonishingly right. #FelicityJones as Jane, his first wife, makes a brilliant counterpoint in this highly evocative drama #MoesArt #SarjitaJain

#TheImitationGame(English) Rating:* * * * this biopic of eccentric British master code breaker Alan Turing is multi-layered and deeper than first imagined. It’s both thought-provoking and entertaining with moments of thrills, triumph, and sadness. Turing was credited with the feat much later in life. So One wrong gets righted while his rights get wronged(Chemically castrated for his homosexuality) #BenedictCumberbatch makes Turing come alive in all his complexities. It’s a potentially award winning turn.#PVRPictures #PriyankaVaswani #HardlyAnonymousPR

#AmericanSniper(English) Rating: * * * It’s a wonder that #ClintEastwood directed this propaganda film based on a true story about #ChrisKyle the most celebrated sniper in American history. Interesting,a little ponderous and very much blindingly patriotically American in it’s outlook. Not as exacting or involving as ‘The Hurt locker’ or ‘Enemy At The Gates’. #BradleyCooper gets buffed-up and does a decent enough take on Kyle. #ClintEastwood #BradleyCooper #WarnerBros #AnkitAgarwal

·         #Paddington(English/LiveActionAnimation) Rating: * * *  Children's favorite Paddington Bear gets the big-screen treatment in this fun family film adapted from Michael Bond's book series. Irresistibly charming  #WarnerBros #HughBonneville #SallyHawkins #NicoleKidman #PaulKing

English film review

More than what meets the Eye

Film: The Imitation Game
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Allen Leech, Rory Kinnear, Mark Strong, Charles Dance, Mathew Beard, Mathew Goode
Director: Mortem Tylum
Rating: * * * *

Runtime: 114 mins

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the brilliant british Mathematician whose invention, a code-breaker for ‘Enigma’ – the predecessor of the Computer, was instrumental in helping the allies beat the Nazis during World War II. Given the nature of his team’s work during the war, the papers relating to it were strictly confidential and never released till recently. So his work, though distinct and brilliant, was never given due credit and the entire effort was shrouded in mystery until the recent revelation in a Biography on Turing by Andrew Hodges’ titled “The Enigma.” the book was adapted for screen by first-time screenwriter Graham Moore who appears to have earned his stripes from the recent flurry of bio-pics scripted by hollywood’s famous and feted writers.
The story, gets into Turing’s life from his early school days as a lonesome socially awkward geek who gets crypto-curious following a friend’s interface. The narrative gives us a glimpse of his confused sexuality and prodigal nature of his crypto-abilities. It then moves forward to the years which he devoted to making his unique machine with the help of fellow brainiacs in Manchester, during the early part of the 1950’s. Notwithstanding his success at breaking the German Enigma’s hard to decipher code, he was persecuted for his homosexuality and sentenced to chemical castration. A year later he committed suicide.

Cumberbatch is brilliant as the introspective, outspoken mathematician-computer scientist later persecuted by the British government for his homosexuality. He absorbs all the traits of the character he assays presenting them with a brilliance and perfection that is breathtaking. Keira knightly also shines with a brief but highly effective performance as a member of the Brianiacs assembled to decode Enigma.  This film is as much a statement about a state’s neglect of it’s unique heroes as much as it is a salvo against the inhumanity of the then British Law that saw homosexuality as a crime. This film if given a wider viewing in India could well become the discussion point for LGBT rights in India.
