#MessengerOfGod (Hindi) Rating: * Monstrous ego trip much in the nature of the one we were subjected to last week(#Shamitabh). At least #Shamitabh was slick and intermittently entertaining. This one is too slippery, and in fact goes one better- it’s directed , produced, costumed, musically serenaded and acted by the great man himself. Divergently Cult-ivated, this film like it’s promoter/ideologue is banking on a readymade following to do the needful. And it’s 3 hrs 30 minutes too long. Looks good but doesn’t feel even half as good!

The setting is Malaysia and the cameraman, Himman Dhamija shows us why it’s truly an Asian hotspot. If this film was a tourism promo for that exotic country, it would have had a phenomenal pull. Unfortunately that’s not all it’s meant to be. And therein lies the problem.
There’s supposedly a plot and a story and some weird time-space, reel-real crisscrossing going on and it makes little sense, if at all. Parallel dimensions are played out-On the reel side it’s about Roy(Ranbir Kapoor), an international art thief who also steals a heart Tia(Jacqueline Fernandez), an art collector/ painter, along the way. On the real side-The script for ‘Roy’ is being written by notorious and successful writer/director Kabir Grewal( Arjun Ramphal),a serial womanizer, just as he has zeroed in on his next capture, the 23rd one, documentary filmmaker Ayesha Aamir(Jacqueline Fernandez). The shooting of the love-story and the real live one play alongside and stutter together too.
Though it’s the real love story unraveling on the screen within the screen, you really don’t get inveigled into it- Mainly because newbie director Vikramjit Singh cannot find a raison-d’être for telling this story. 156 minutes of a languidly paced narrative spliced with inadequate dialogues and atrociously stupid set-ups almost make you comatose. Add to it song bursts that appear at totally inappropriate and inopportune times and you get a pretentiously high thinking endeavor that finds it difficult to hide it’s mainstream sensibilities.
The film is beautifully shot but there’s really no purpose to that unless it’s to make an incredibly beautiful country look even more so. The songs are peppy, folksy and soulful but don’t fit in with the narrative. Jacqueline looks beautiful but her dialogue delivery and acting credentials continue to be suspect. Ranbir Kapoor is a little too sober and low-key to be able to keep his fan-base contended while Arjun Ramphal, looking soulful and intense, seems a bit lost in this entirely puerile exercise. Above all, there is nothing much to the script other than parallel plotlines tentatively feeding off each other through random musings and bizarre wordplay - and that’s not a pretty sight mind you!
