Deckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for the death of his brother.
Review:
The scripting credited to Chris Morgan and Gary Scott Thomson has the flimsiest content ever but horror specialist James Wan makes it all dark and dangerous with outlandish action and facile spectacle. You don’t expect much of a story from this franchise. The reason for existence is mainly the milking of the franchise down to the last penny. Unfortunately Paul Walker’s untimely accidental death in the midst of shooting this one, puts the brakes on any true-blue future extensions.
Dominic Torretto and his gang, having left the criminal mercenary life behind after defeating an international terrorist Owen Shaw, hoped for a quieter life after going their separate ways. Shaw's brother, Deckard Shaw. though, doean’t want them to have it so easy. So off he goes on a killing spree-knocking out the crew one by one for revenge. To add to the accumulated mayhem, there’s a Somalian terrorist, Jakarde, and a shady government official,"Mr. Nobody," are both competing to steal a computer terrorism program called God's Eye, that can turn any technological device into a weapon. So the super successful franchise gets it’s reason and Torretto and team another salvo at tweaking muscle and machine in an attempt to stop Shaw and retrieve the God's Eye program while caught in a power struggle between terrorist and the United States government.
Since a major portion of the back story is well known there’s little reason for any exposition as such. Right from the word go it’s all-out action but for few brief interludes of mumbling conversation interspersed. The characterizations are the card-board cut-out types – all muscle and brawn- better befitting a poster rather than inhabiting a cinema.
The Fast & Furious series has transformed itself from a discrete racing fan-adventure into a mammoth franchise spins-off on jaw-dropping vehicular carnage and pulverizing testosterone. The action is designed to be spectacular – and of course going against all the laws of physics. Cars jump from one building to another and in and out of planes. They also crash, spin and fly. Buildings crumble while bullets pelt and grenades explode. Fight sequences involving Vin, Jason and Paul are also quite vicariously laid out. A drag race and a harkening back to Tokyo Drift add more muscle to the spectacle. Indian actor Ali Fazal gets to do a brief cameo and looks quite comfortable in the set-up. The final tribute to Paul is what actually gets you involved – at least partially. Paul’s journey through the series gets catalogued beautifully . Paul’s scenes in the film were in fact shot using his two brothers and VFX did the rest. In fact the real hero of this film is the VFX. The frantic editing doesn’t give you much time to delve on the implausibility of it all either. James Wan does appear to know how to tweak the formula to get high-performing results. He has given this final series’ salvo a finish that will be well remembered by the fans-at least!
